For almost 50 years, the environmental non-profit GrowNYC has worked alongside residents to transform communities and empower them to make the city clean, healthy, and sustainable. The first Greenmarket opened in 1976, and since then, the organization has operated the largest open-air farmers' market in the country, built and maintained community and school gardens, offered hands-on education for all ages, and run a citywide recycling outreach program.
Project Farmhouse emerged from the concept of establishing a central location where New Yorkers from all walks of life can connect with their food, the land, and their neighbors. Despite being the largest city in the U.S., New York lacks a center for environmental issues akin to those for photography, cultural heritage, or art. With the evident impacts of climate change, the necessity for an international center for learning, discussion, and action becomes increasingly critical.
Project Farmhouse provides a platform for dialogue and action on sustainability, the first of its kind. A diverse range of programming engages participants, planting ideas and fostering healthier, greener decisions and actions.
Visitors are welcomed to Project Farmhouse, where the space is available for rental, knowing that their rental supports hands-on environmental education initiatives.
