The Lower East Side's best venues

Old meets new in this historic neighbourhood that holds firmly to its roots as gentrification comes thick and fast.

Just a step away from Little Italy and Chinatown, the Lower East Side has a buzz that draws visitors to an array of trendy eateries and artsy venues. Think indie bookshops, intimate galleries and many-a-tour of the area's extensive street art.

Particularly popular after dark, nighttime brings the crowds and draws out the locals to enjoy its rich live music and bustling bars.

1. A triple-floored venue with a rooftop for the golden hour: The DL

Lower East Side, NYC

Set on the corner of Delancey and Ludlow, The DL offers a rooftop bar stretching an impressive 7,500ft that showcases views of the Lower East skyline. Enrage meteorologists by not worrying about the weather: the venue boasts one of the largest retractable rooftops in NYC ensuring year-round dryness.

This multi-levelled spot has three floors to choose from. Step a floor below into the sultry, red lounge for a cocktail or glide on down to Dinner on Ludlow for a taste of ‘elevated home cooking’.

With weekend DJs, state-of-the-art AV and in-house catering, this spot is a one-stop-shop for your entertainment needs and is available for private hire.

Just remember to dress fairly smart. Athleisure, keep out.

2. For food you won't find anywhere else in the city: The Gugu Room

Lower East Side, NYC

Freshly opened on Orchard Street, The Gugu Room is ‘‘New York’s first Filipino-Japanese izakaya’. Softly lit interiors and a copper bar sit under a disco ball, which hints at the late-night dancing that often occurs here.

Specialising in contemporary Japanese food with a Filipino twist, the extensive sharing menu offers specialities such as crispy gyoza tacos to udon and bone marrow. For the more adventurous (and stronger stomached) try a porcupine skewer or an 18-day fertilised duck egg.

You may be tempted to try one of Gugu’s unique cocktails, with the wasabi and ginger margarita their most popular. Or wash down your dinner with a choice of two dozen Japanese whiskeys.

Head now for a memorable meal or enquire for private hire.

3. My big fat Greek trendy restaurant: Kiki’s

Lower East Side, NYC

Described as having a youthful energy, Kiki’s is a laid-back spot that brings the crowds. Its olive green doors and stone walls convey a taste of The Med to the Lower East Side’s Orchard Street.

In classic Greek style, the restaurant is known for serving generous portions alongside relatively cheap prices. Think Greek salad that is 70% feta. Diners can share big plates of grilled fish and drink house wine out of tiny glasses. Yamas!

Available for private hire. Finish the night with some Ouzo and in the words of The Scissor Sisters, 'Let's have a Kiki.

4. Transport yourself to a Mediterranean Townhouse: Casa Duende

Lower East Side, NYC

This triple-floored oasis is naturally lit and offers a 3000 square ft terrace, with enough tropical plants to rival Martha Stewart’s garden.

An open kitchen, lots of exposed brick and a spiral wooden staircase leave the layout flexible to be altered for each event. Be it a fashion shoot, corporate dinner or birthday celebration, this townhouse has seen them all.

Projectors and WiFi are included alongside a sound system. A hanging chair is also available so you can spin around and just… think about things. Gather your closest 225 colleagues and head to Casa Duende for a natural aesthetic in the bustling city.

5. Music and food below ground: Canary Club

Lower East Side, NYC

This New Orleans-inspired venue is made up of a restaurant and cocktail lounge where live music plays from 9 pm to 4 am.

Book The Supper Club, an intimate private dining room for up to 18 guests to sample the seasonal menu in French salon style. For a slightly larger group, step below ground to Canary’s avant-garde-style bar, which can host 25 for cocktails and light bites. And if you have more friends than that, rent the music club. We’re talking chartreuse silk moire patterned walls, warmly lit, with stage and full AV included for up to 100 guests.

With happy hour and weekly specials, this Broome Street spot feeds your stomach and your ears.
