The best Brooklyn wine bars

Oh, wine bars of Brooklyn. We love your handwritten logos, your overpriced tote bags, and your interiors inspired by celebrity Architectural Digest tours. No matter how much we make fun of you and your vintage Levis-wearing clientele, we’ll continue to show up with dates, friends, and by ourselves.

We’ve rounded up the best wine bars across the borough – and trust us, it’s a lot – to make your life a little easier. Have a look.

1. Brooklyn, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down: The Four Horsemen

Williamsburg, Brooklyn

A Brooklyn wine bar owned by an indie rock celebrity sounds like a Broad City plotline, but it’s a reality at The Four Horsemen, owned in part by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. This Michelin-star spot has a humble interior, decorated with colorful bottles and funky illustrations that align with the branding.

An abundance of natural wines are offered in half-glasses for abundant sampling and full glasses or bottles if you know what you want. The list is kept up-to-date with new additions regularly. To compliment the wine, Chef Nick Curtola has developed a changing menu to highlight fresh, seasonal dishes like chilled beef tendon with fennel and mint, or Montauk swordfish with broccoli and olives.

This tiny spot can accommodate up to 6 people for group dining, and a prix-fixe menu is available for $115 a person. Contact the venue for buyout options.

2. An all-day Brooklyn wine bar for the romantics: Lovebirds

Greenpoint, Brooklyn

If you’re not on a date at Lovebirds, you may feel a little out of place. Photos of iconic couples grace the walls, and the vibe is romantic with dim lighting and arched windows. Still, you can celebrate love of all kinds: even if that love is wine.

Come early for coffee and sandwiches, come later for scallop crudo and confit duck leg, and come anytime for wine – no judgment here. Wines by the glass start at $8 for the house wine or order something special for $12-$19 a glass. Each wine is sustainably and ethically sourced, low-intervention, and zero-waste.

Private tastings, customized menus, and event planning are all available for up to 50 guests. There are also monthly workshops aimed at education around waste reduction, led by local industry experts. If the wine is too good, they also own a bottle shop on Bushwick Ave.

3. Get lost in this wine bar without a menu: Sauced

Williamsburg, Brooklyn

You put your whole trust into your sommelier at this Williamsburg watering hole. When you sit down, your server conducts an interview to get an idea of what you’d like and brings you something from the 150-bottle list or one of the 20 wines by the glass. Daily food specials are written only on a piece of butcher paper behind the bar and served as small plates to snack on while you get sauced on custom-chosen natural wine.

The patio has an intimate, backyard-like atmosphere, and the interior evokes an oenophile’s cozy apartment. You can rent the outdoor space for up to 80 standing guests, or the interior for up to 65.

Sauced often collaborates with local businesses and creatives for pop-ups, and 100% of their (very cute) merch sales go to charitable community programs in the area.

4. A staff-run, zero-waste natural wine bar in Brooklyn: Rhodora

Fort Greene, Brooklyn

Imagine a bar without a trash can in NYC. Nightmare, right? To Rhodora, it’s heaven, and a reality within grasp. This sustainable wine bar produces no waste, and all leftovers are turned into fertilizer for the neighborhood gardens by an on-site composter. The innovation extends to the staffing model: there’s no executive chef or sommelier: every team member prepares food, pours wine, and serves customers, as well as owns a profit share in the restaurant.

Despite their constraints, they have an impressive wine list, all low-intervention and sourced from small-farm partners from around the world. Wines by the glass will run you about $16, and you can order sharing plates like marinated olives, cured meats, burrata, and fava beans from the food menu.

You can rent the entire space for wine tastings or events of up to 45 seated guests.

5. The very first natural wine bar in Brooklyn: June

Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

Walk down any street in Brooklyn and you’re bound to come across a wine bar. More likely than not, it’ll be a natural wine bar. And that’s thanks to June, the Carroll Gardens institution that pioneered the trend back in 2015. Though there’s far more competition these days, it still sticks out as one of the best spots for a low-intervention glass in the city.

Rotating wines by the glass hover around $15, and you can order bottles from across Europe and beyond. Dinner features small plates thoughtfully designed to pair with wines, like charcuterie plates, apple gem salad, and mushroom risotto.

The intimate space, with the interior influenced by vintage Paris, is ideal for dates. If romance isn’t your thing, book a family-style dinner or private event. The main dining room and bar can be booked for 70 guests, the patio for 25, or a combined full buyout for 60.
