Joseph Paxton, head gardener at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, designed the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851 which was forged on the design of the St Pancras cast-iron train shed. Paxton was later knighted by Queen Victoria that year.
